Human rights organisation Black Sash has lashed out at the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) after 150 000 grant beneficiaries did not receive their payouts this month.

Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said the payment delay was the result of a verification process, which authenticates personal information, such as banking details, names, addresses and ID numbers. Those whose personal details could not be verified had not been paid in an effort to prevent fraud.

But Black Sash’s Western Cape manager, Thandi Henkeman, said the organisation was alarmed “that yet again Sassa has failed in its constitutional obligation to deliver social grants”.
