The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Reconciliation Committee, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, confirmed on Tuesday that the internal conflict within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has been successfully resolved.
Oyinlola, who is a former governor of Osun State, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the party’s crucial meeting in Abuja, stating “We have been able to resolve the differences causing issues within the NWC. This unity is essential for the PDP’s progress.”
Though he refrained from disclosing specific details of the resolved issues, Oyinlola emphasised that the focus was on healing the rift within the NWC.
He also said that the committee’s findings would be presented to the PDP Governors’ Forum later that evening.
When asked about the party’s upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, Oyinlola stated it was not part of the committee’s discussions.
An anonymous NWC member confirmed to the Guardian that the forum would finalise decisions based on the reconciliation committee’s recommendations.
“That (NEC) wasn’t part of our discussion. I am telling you again that it wasn’t, and I am not in a position to speak at the NEC meeting. I am the chairman of the National Reconciliation Committee,” he said.
Meanwhile, a former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Bode George, blamed ex-Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, for making a controversial decision that eventually split the party.
George explained that the crisis began during the PDP presidential convention when Atiku Abubakar emerged as the winner. He recounted how Tambuwal addressed the convention, announced his withdrawal from the race, and urged delegates to vote for Atiku, a move that shifted the dynamics.
“Tambuwal’s actions, praised by Ayu as the ‘hero of the convention,’ unknowingly sowed the seeds of the current crisis, undermining the party’s founding principles,” George remarked.
He acknowledged that the party now needs healing and should have acted sooner to prevent the issue from escalating,” he added.
