While experts believe South Africa’s latest legal bid to force a ceasefire in Gaza has little hope of success, top diplomat Zane Dangor says an attempt had to be made to address the starvation and suffering in the war-ravaged area – even if it doesn’t succeed.
Speaking to News24 on Thursday, Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) director-general Dangor said the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is “something that we see on a daily basis, we can’t shy away from it, we can’t hide away from it and there’s really a sense of we can’t stand back and do nothing about it”.
On Wednesday, South Africa filed an urgent bid to persuade the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to amend the previous provisional measures it ordered against Israel on 26 January 2024 “to prevent a catastrophic famine in the Gaza Strip”.
