As mop-up operations continue in some parts of Durban, which were devastated by floods at the weekend, some residents in Umhlanga say the community has stood together in the wake of a deadly storm.

An Umhlanga CBD resident, Salona Maharaj, said the torrential rains, which claimed at least 11 lives in KwaZulu-Natal, were intense and unexpected.

She said: “I just remember opening the sliding door and seeing people running and taking cover. The car parks in our building were totally flooded, the lifts were damaged during power and water outages.”
