A South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) used a service weapon to shoot another soldier and then shoot themself, the SANDF said on Saturday.
It said it convened a board of inquiry to work with the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (Monusco) to investigate the incident, which occurred on Thursday.
This is the second tragedy to befall South African soldiers in the DRC this year.
