They saw me as next Drogba in England, but I’m not — Lukaku

Striker Romelu Lukaku has spoken out about the comparisons that have followed him throughout his career, especially during his time in English football.

Often likened to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba due to his physical stature and style, Lukaku has revealed that the comparisons were misplaced.

“In England, they wanted to put me in a box. They see someone built like me and think: new Drogba,” Lukaku said during an interview with Friends of Sports released on Wednesday via YouTube.

The Belgian striker, who has played for major Premier League clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Everton, noted that while his physical presence is a defining feature, his playing style differs significantly from that of Drogba.

“I’m not like that. Didier was more back to goal; he could hold up the ball no matter where you play it in from. That wasn’t my style,” he explained.

Lukaku further underlined the challenges he faced being consistently compared to Drogba, whose style and skills, according to him, were a template for how people expected him to play.
