S’South teams arrive Edo today for zonal elimination

Five South South states will arrive in Edo on Sunday (today) for the zonal elimination in eight ball games ahead of the National Sports Festival billed for Ogun State from May 16 to 30.

The states, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River will join the host to battle for NSF tickets in football, abula, handball, cricket, basketball, beach volleyball, hockey and volleyball from Monday 24 to February 28. The elimination will involve male and female teams from the region.

The competition will be played in a round-robin format. The top teams from the round-robin stage will advance to the knockout stage, leading to semi-finals and finals.

The winners and runners-up of each sport will qualify to represent the South-South zone at the NSF in Ogun State.

The executive chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin  Enabulele, expressed the state’s readiness to play host to the rest of the zone, adding that everything has been put in place for a hitch-free tourney.

He said, “Everything has been put in place to ensure a hitch-free elimination games in Benin. Edo is known for its hospitality and we are home to sports.

“The facilities in the designated centres, including the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium are in good shape. So, we are ready as always.”
