Blooming Greens School, Yaba, Lagos State, has said spelling bee competition improves learning and comprehension of concepts.
The proprietor of the school, Mrs Susan Babatunde-Yamah, said the school decided to host this year’s edition of the Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition so as to promote literacy among pupils.
She said, “I’m happy the participants from our school made it to the next stage, which is the national level and we will be going for the final.”
She advised schools to pay more attention to literacy.
“There are very huge words in this competition, which many of us have never come across and they were spelled by these students, this is so encouraging.”
She also complained about the Federal Government’s lack of interest in sponsoring the event.
The National Coordinator of the programme, Abdulsalam Ibrahim, said the goal of the Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition was to promote literacy among Nigerian students and reward learners with amazing opportunities.
According to him, “We have over 500 participants from various schools across Lagos for this sixth edition of Nigeria Spelling Bee and we are going to pick four qualifiers at the national level to represent Lagos State.
“At the end of the programme, we have N1m scholarship for the winner in the senior category and N500,000 scholarship for the junior category
He mentioned that the final competition will hold from July 26th to 29th at Deeper Life High School in Port Harcourt.
At the event, Afunku Burhanudeen from Alfallah Beneficient Foundation College, Idimu, Sheidu Abdulhafeez from Abibatu Magaji Senior High School, Agege, Precious Munachi from Blooming Greens School, Yaba and Mamman Jamaldeen from Airforce Secondary School, Shasha all qualified to the national level.
