Promising Real Madrid academy talent Marc Cucalón, has announced his retirement from professional football at just 19.

This difficult decision comes after a two-year battle with a severe bacterial infection that complicated his recovery from a ligament injury sustained in September 2022.

Cucalón’s troubles began with a routine injury, a torn ligament suffered in a UEFA Youth League match.

However, complications arose when a bacterial infection took hold during surgery, causing significant cartilage damage that would ultimately make any return to competitive play impossible.

Despite enduring multiple treatments and fighting to regain his health, the young midfielder realized his only option was retirement for the sake of his long-term well-being.

The decision is a blow not only for Cucalón but for La Fábrica, Real Madrid’s youth system, where he was regarded as a future midfield star. Known for his leadership qualities and playing style reminiscent of Xabi Alonso, Cucalón was respected by teammates and coaches alike. His coach, Álvaro Arbeloa, shared a heartfelt tribute, acknowledging his potential and dedication to the sport.

Reflecting on his journey, Cucalón expressed gratitude toward Real Madrid and everyone who supported him. “One must always overcome and keep fighting,” he wrote, vowing to carry the lessons learned in soccer into the next chapter of his life.
