Cape Town businessman Ralph Stanfield and his alleged associate Johannes Coetzee have been charged with the murder of Hard Livings gang boss Rashied Staggie.
Staggie was shot dead in London Road, Salt River, on 13 December 2019.
His twin Rashaad was shot and set alight in the same road in 1996 by People Against Gangsterism and Drugs.
The break in Rashied’s murder was revealed by prosecutor Frank van Heerden when Stanfield and Coetzee appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court via an online Teams link from their respective prisons, along with 12 other accused.
That case started in September as a result of a dispute over stolen cash and an attempted murder, but has since ballooned to cover allegations of murder and attempted murder, the destruction of documents, as well as a firearms case.
The murder charges relate to City of Cape Town official Wendy Kloppers, alleged 27s gang leader William “Red” Stevens, policeman Faizal Adams, and the attempted murder of Joel Booysen, son of alleged 26’s boss Jerome Booysen.
The court heard that the State was also joining the case of Malusi Booi, former City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for housing, to this case.
Booi appeared in court with nine others on Wednesday on charges of tender fraud worth R850 million, money laundering, and corruption which allegedly including the hijacking of a business.
Booi and the other nine are expected to appear after this case on Friday for the construction-related matter, where their bail application is still under way.
