The Lagos State Police Command says its operatives have detained two women for allegedly selling newborn babies.

The Command’s spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, made this known in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

Hundeyin said the culprits, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, were detained by patrol policemen from Ojodu Division stationed at Berger bus stop, an entry point into Lagos State, who had earlier been notified about the suspects by a good Samaritan.

He stated that the suspects were found carrying two newborn baby girls, roughly six days old, while traveling from Abia State on September 9, 2024.

According to him, investigations revealed that the suspects were en route to give the infants to one nurse in Lagos State whom the mother of the babies promised to link them up with only after they had reached in Lagos.

The suspects, who admitted to the crime, revealed that they were given N150,000 for the transfer of the newborns to Lagos, adding that the mother of the babies sold them since she could not give them sufficient care.

The Police image maker said the matter was passed to the Gender Unit of the Command from where the infants were placed in the custody of a motherless babies’ home for proper care and medical evaluation.

He further claimed that while investigation is ongoing to capture other conspirators, the arrested individuals were arraigned on Thursday.
