Renowned Nigerian musician Phyno has revealed the reasons behind his decision to rap in his native Igbo language, despite initially starting his career rapping in English.

In the latest episode of the In My Opinion podcast, Phyno shared that growing up in an Igbo-speaking environment and wanting to offer a unique sound to the global music scene drove his switch to Igbo.

“I realized that rapping in English wouldn’t set me apart, as it’s already dominated by Western artists,” Phyno explained. “By rapping in Igbo, I’m selling something unique to the world.”

Meanwhile, Phyno, who drew inspiration from legendary English-speaking rappers like Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and 2Pac, emphasized the importance of cultural representation. “I incorporate highlife influences and wear traditional Igbo attire to showcase my heritage.”

Lastly, Phyno’s decision has contributed to his success and distinctiveness in the music industry.
