The 1979/84 set of Ijebu Ife Community Grammar School in Ogun State has pledged approximately N13.5m to rehabilitate the Albert Osisami Library, which has long been neglected since its donation by Pa Osisami in 1983.

A statement by the old student said that once in disrepair and nearly abandoned, the library was set to receive a complete overhaul as part of the old students’ efforts to commemorate their 40th anniversary since leaving school.

President of the alumni group, Mr Muyiwa Taiwo, said that this project represented their signature initiative for the milestone celebration.

It read “The rehabilitation will involve extensive renovations, including new tiling, furnishing, and the addition of a diverse selection of books, transforming the library into a modern facility. Plans for a digital library are also underway, with the completed project scheduled to be delivered to the school on November 9, coinciding with the anniversary events.

“Among the planned activities is a lecture titled, ‘Reviving Reading Culture in a Digital Age,’ to be presented by Dr Yemi Atanda from the Theatre Arts Department of Osun State University.

“The principal at the time of the 1984 graduating class, Mr Segun Adebanjo, will also deliver a keynote address during the ceremony.

“Additional activities include awarding scholarships to underprivileged students, recognising deserving teachers, and honoring outstanding former students of the school.”

Taiwo emphasised the importance of giving back to their alma mater, stating, “We owe our school a debt of gratitude. The institution was established by dedicated members of the Ijebu Ife community, who invested their time and resources for future generations. We must ensure their legacy is preserved and not allowed to deteriorate. This rehabilitation is our way of reviving the library and honoring that commitment.”
