Police are searching for a Limpopo man who allegedly used an axe to hack his 20-month-old son to death on Saturday evening and seriously injure his wife and mother-in-law.

It is alleged that he attacked them at a ceremony at their neighbours’ home at around 19:00 on Saturday.

According to preliminary reports, the man’s mother-in-law was carrying the child on her back at the time of the attack and his 34-year-old wife was struck in her face.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Ritavi police in the Mopani district launched a massive “manhunt” for the man.

Ledwaba said:

The victims were transported to the local hospital but unfortunately, the child lost his life at the hospital. The female victims were admitted with serious injuries.

Police are investigating charges of murder, attempted murder and assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

“The motive behind the incident is currently unknown, but domestic-violence-related issues cannot be ruled out,” Ledwaba added.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said: “Situations like this leave us feeling very disappointed because we address gender-based violence and domestic violence issues on a daily basis.
