The main cause of death for KwaZulu-Natal councillors in recent years has been assassination, says the South African Local Government Association (Salga) in the province.

Since November 2021, 40 KwaZulu-Natal councillors have died, 18 of whom were assassinated. The rest of the deaths were of natural causes (17), car accidents (three) and suicide (two).

Salga KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Thami Ntuli said the prevalence of violence and killings spoke to a culture that has normalised assassinations.
