The Water Resources and Ecosystems Department at IHE Delft conducts research and education to support society in making decisions that sustain freshwater resources and ecosystems. We are currently looking for a motivated PhD research candidate to join us in a collaborative project focused on financing and sustainability in climate change adaptation, particularly in the water sector.
Project Description and Candidate Role
The PhD candidate will conduct research related to the financing and sustainability of climate change adaptation in the water sector. The primary objective of the project is to evaluate past climate change adaptations in low-/middle-income countries, focusing on financial, environmental, and social aspects. The research will provide policy recommendations and equitable financial investment guidelines for developing sustainable and inclusive climate change adaptation plans, with a focus on Tanzania.
Responsibilities
- Review climate change adaptations implemented in the case study country.
- Develop and apply a methodology for evaluating the sustainability of climate change adaptation plans.
- Travel to case-study regions for data collection and consultations.
- Develop and defend a PhD research proposal.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Contribute to project activities and present results at conferences and symposia.
- Mentor MSc theses linked to the PhD research.
- Write and defend a PhD thesis.
Requirements
- Must originate from a low-/middle-income country (preference given to women).
- Master’s degree in economics, finance, hydrology, or a related discipline.
- Excellent analytical skills, including experience with programming and GIS software.
- Knowledge of climate change impacts and adaptation related to water resources.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Willingness to mentor MSc students and work in a multicultural environment.
Terms of Employment
- Full-time position for 48 months (4 years).
- Stationed in Delft, the Netherlands.
- Employment according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities.
- Initial contract for 18 months, with the possibility of extension based on a detailed PhD research proposal.
