Akwa Ibom club Ibom Angels, alongside Benue-based Honey Badgers, have been promoted to the NWFL Premiership after emerging as the two best teams in the 2024/25 Championship in Calabar.

Featuring 19 teams, there were only two slots for qualification, and two teams were relegated in a fiercely contested four-group competition.

The quartet of Osun Babes, Pelican Stars, Honey Badgers, and Ibom Angels topped their respective groups, hence the matchup between Osun Babes against Ibom Angels and Honey Badgers against host team Pelican Stars.

It was Edwin Okon’s side that first booked their ticket at the expense of Osun Babes, defeating the western club by two goals at the U.J. Eusene Stadium.

Pelican Stars then took on Liadi Bashiru’s Honey Badger next in front of a roaring home crowd and top dignitaries, but it was the Benue-based club that stole a goal edge, much to the heartbreak of the host, to seal their promotion.

Meanwhile, Dreamstar Ladies and Kaduna Queens have been relegated to the third tier of women’s football, having lost their relegation play-off games against Heroes Queens and Chosen Generations Angels, respectively.
