An IFP councillor was shot and killed in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the assailants also fired on a scholar transport vehicle, wounding four children and killing two.
Mathe added the triple murder had prompted an investigation by the police’s political killings task team.
She said the assailants ambushed the councillor on the R618 while he was attending to a car breakdown on Wednesday afternoon.

“A group of armed men stopped next to his vehicle and shot the councillor multiple times; he sadly succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
“The suspects then fired shots at a passing scholar transport taxi that was transporting school children.
“Four children were shot and wounded and two of them, aged 11 and 12, sadly succumbed to their injuries.”
IFP spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa said the incident happened in Mtubatuba.
Hlengwa expressed shock and disappointment at the continued killings of political leaders in the province.
“While full details about exactly what transpired are not yet available, it is deeply concerning that political assassinations continue unabated in KwaZulu-Natal.”
