Gcina Mkhize’s eviction battle continues: SA actor turns to crowdfunding to raise R1.5 million

• South African actor Gcina Mkhize, renowned for her roles in Isibaya and The River, is facing eviction after the bank auctioned her home.   
• She has launched a BackaBuddy campaign to raise R1.5 million for legal fees and living expenses but has only raised R4 347 so far.   
• Mkhize has publicly appealed for more support, claiming her home was unlawfully sold.

South African actor Gcina Mkhize, best known for her roles in popular local television dramas, opened a BackaBuddy page to raise funds in her fight to keep her house.   

Mkhize, whose acting credits include notable performances in shows such as Isibaya, The River, and Gaz’lam, has been a well-regarded figure in the South African entertainment industry for years.   

Her work has earned her a dedicated following, but now, she is grappling with a severe legal battle that threatens her family’s home. 

After the bank auctioned off her property, Mkhize is now at risk of eviction by the new owner, Dzivhu Tevin Mashila.  

In response, she has launched a crowdfunding campaign through BackaBuddy, seeking to raise R1.5 million to cover legal fees and living expenses.

Mkhize, a single mother of four, said she has struggled with financial instability for nearly four years due to a lack of consistent income. 

In a video posted to social media, Mkhize expressed her gratitude to those who have contributed to her campaign and urged more people to support her efforts.  

The campaign description reads, “Gcina Mkhize’s house is currently in dispute. It was sold in an unlawful sale. The new buyer is trying to evict her and her four kids illegally.”   

As of now, the fundraiser has managed to raise only R4 347 of the R1.5 million goal, a long way from what is needed to prevent her eviction and secure her future.    

Mkhize’s video has garnered mixed reactions, but she is still hoping for broader financial assistance from the public.  

The actor has also used social media to share her frustrations with the ongoing legal battle.   

In a series of video clips, she accused Mashila’s workers of allegedly intruding and removing some of her belongings, including equipment she uses to make jewellery. She claimed the workers were acting unlawfully and without her consent.

Despite the slow progress of the fundraising campaign, she continues to fight for her home.
