Friday’s weather: It’s set to be a scorcher as already-high temperatures soar across the country

Sweltering temperatures and high fire danger conditions are expected in several provinces across the country, according to the South African Weather Service.

Impact-based warning

A Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds and hail, leading to localised damage to informal and formal settlements is expected over the south-eastern parts of the Northern Cape.

Fire danger warnings

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Kamiesberg Local Municipality in the Northern Cape, Cederberg and Oudtshoorn local municipalities in the Western Cape, Sarah Baartman District Municipality (excluding the coastal areas), as well as Amathole and Engcobo local municipalities in the Eastern Cape.

Advisory

Extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected in places over the interior of the Cape Winelands, the Central and Little Karoo in the Western Cape.

The weather in your region

Partly cloudy and warm with isolated afternoon thunderstorms in the south-west is expected for Gauteng.

The expected UVB sunburn index is high.

Mpumalanga will be cloudy at first, otherwise partly cloudy, and cool to warm temperatures are forecast.

Cloudy conditions can be expected in the morning in Limpopo, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions are expected.

The North West will be partly cloudy with hot temperatures and isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the extreme north-east.

Partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions are forecast for the Free State with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the extreme east.

The Northern Cape is expected to be cool along the coast where it will be cloudy with fog patches in the morning.

Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy with warm to hot temperatures and isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the east.

It will also be very hot in places in the east, but extremely hot in the extreme north-western interior.

The wind along the coast will be a light to moderate southerly to south-easterly.

Warm conditions along the coast is the forecast for the Western Cape where it will be cloudy with morning fog patches.

Otherwise, partly cloudy and hot to very hot conditions are expected but it will be extremely hot over the north-eastern interior where isolated evening thundershowers are forecast.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate to fresh northerly to north-westerly along the west and south-west coast where it will become a light to moderate southerly to south-westerly in the evening.

Otherwise, a moderate to fresh westerly to south-westerly is forecast.

The expected UVB sunburn index is extreme.

The western half of the Eastern Cape will be fine with warm to hot temperatures, becoming partly cloudy over the interior with isolated afternoon thunderstorms.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate south-westerly.

Fine and warm to hot conditions are expected for the eastern half of the province, becoming partly cloudy over the interior with isolated afternoon thunderstorms.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate north-easterly.

KwaZulu-Natal will be partly cloudy in the morning with morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise fine and warm conditions are forecast.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate to fresh north-easterly, but strong south of Durban.

The expected UVB sunburn index is extreme.
