South African umpire Shaun George has died (Gallo Images)

Former South African cricket umpire Shaun George has died.

He was 56. 

The news was confirmed to News24 by Cricket South Africa on Sunday. 

It is understood that George suffered a stroke on Thursday and died on Saturday night. 

George announced his retirement from umpiring in March 2023 having stood in 60 ODIs and 50 T20Is. 

He was also an accomplished first-class cricketer, having played for both Eastern Province and Transvaal in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
