EFF secretary-general and head of security Marshall Dlamini has been convicted of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, as well as malicious damage to property, for hitting a policeman in Parliament in February 2019.

Magistrate Nasha Banwari said in her judgment in the Cape Town Regional Court that she did not accept Dlamini’s claim that he was protecting party leader Julius Malema from an assassination threat.

He hit Johan Carstens in the face and broke his glasses in a fracas in the lobby on 7 February 2019 after the State of the Nation Address.

Sentencing proceedings were postponed to 31 May.
