A pupil at a school in Ngqeleni, about 30km away from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, suffered a serious injury to her hand last week when her teacher allegedly caned her for arriving late.

She hasn’t been able to attend school since.

The Eastern Cape department has suspended the Sandi High School teacher, pending an investigation.
