Davido has declared his support for Asue Ighodalo, the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state.

The Afrobeats singer took to his Instastory on Sunday to endorse Ighodalo.

Davido posted a ThisDay cover featuring the governorship candidate.

In the accompanying caption, he wrote: “The next governor of my mother’s homeland”.

Veronica Adeleke, Davido’s late mother, is from Edo state.

Davido’s post comes after his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, Osun state governor, arrived in Benin.

Adeleke was reportedly part of a delegation of PDP governors attending a major rally for Ighodalo.

Prominent figures who have declared their support for the governorship aspirant are Banky W, Adesua Etomi, Etinosa Idemudia, and Charles Inojie.

Others are Aloy Chife, ex-vice president Atiku Abubakar, and the former Cross River governors Liyel Imoke and Donald Duke.

The Edo governorship elections will take place on September 21, 2024.

Godwin Obaseki, the incumbent governor of the state, is rounding off his second and final term in office.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said 17 political parties have presented candidates seeking to succeed Obaseki.

Olumide Akpata is the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) while Monday Okpebholo is the representative of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
