According to Limpopo police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, the cause of the crash is still unknown and an investigation has been launched.

It appears that a Renault sedan collided head-on with a police van that was travelling from Mookgophong towards Mokopane on the R101.

Hadebe said:

All five people from the Renault sedan and two passengers from the SAPS (SA Police Service) Toyota light delivery van – a police officer and a suspect – perished on the scene.

The driver of the SAPS vehicle, a sergeant, was rushed to hospital and is receiving medical attention.

The officer who died in the crash has been identified as constable MM Makwela, who was attached to Naboomspruit police.

“The identity of the [suspect] who also perished in the scene, as well as the five deceased from the other vehicle, will be released as soon as their next of kin are notified,” Hadebe said.
