CAF fines Libya, awards 3 points, 3 goals to Nigeria

On Saturday, the Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) officially awarded Nigeria three points and three goals following the controversial Matchday 4 qualification match for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This decision comes after the match was declared null due to irregularities that affected its outcome.

The board’s ruling aims to uphold the integrity of the tournament and ensure that fair play is maintained in the qualification process.

As a result, Nigeria’s position in the standings has improved, bolstering their chances of advancing to the prestigious tournament amidst ongoing scrutiny of the match’s circumstances.

The match was scheduled to be played in Libya on 15 October.

CAF, in its ruling on Saturday signed by Ousmane Kane, Chairman, Disciplinary Board, said that the Libya Football Federation breached Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

It declared that Libya had forfeited the match No. 87 involving her and Nigeria which was to be played in Benghazi.

The soccer body awarded 3 goals and 3 points to Nigeria.

The Disciplinary Board also slammed $50,000  fine of Libya Football Federation.

The LFF was ordered to pay the fine of USD 50,000, with payment due within 60 days of notification of the present decision.

The outcome of the Disciplinary Committee means that Nigeria is close to qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with two matches to spare.
