BMW has revealed key details around its next-generation powertrain technology, promising greater efficiency, extended range, and more affordable pricing. The German automaker has revealed that its upcoming ‘Gen6’ EV architecture will make its debut with the Neue Klasse models. To support the large-scale production of Gen6 batteries, BMW has set up five new manufacturing sites.
BMW Neue Klasse Gen 6 Battery: All you need to know
One of the standout features of the new EVs will be their significantly improved range. BMW claims that its Gen6 models will be capable of covering at least 600 km on a full charge. In fact, some models will be able to return a range of up to 900 km. The new battery system, built on an 800V platform, will also enable ultra-fast charging, allowing the batteries to be juiced up for ranges of up to 300 km in just 10 minutes.
These batteries will pack NMC battery cells, featuring a cylindrical design. Some key highlights of these cells include 20% more density than the prismatic modules used in today’s ‘Gen5’ lithium-ion battery packs. As a result, BMW’s new high-voltage batteries will offer a 30% boost in range, a 30% increase in charging speed, and a more than 20% improvement in energy density. Crucially, production costs are set to drop by up to 50%, which will eventually reduce the asking price of the next-gen BMW EVs.
Beyond battery technology, BMW is taking a flexible approach to powertrain configurations. Depending on the model, the upcoming Neue Klasse EVs will be available with one, two, three, or even four electric motors.
BMW’ CRCC battery recycling plant
BMW is also making significant investments in battery recycling. The company has established a dedicated Cell Recycling Competence Center (CRCC) in Bavaria, backed by an investment of 170 million Euros. This facility will use a direct mechanical recycling process, avoiding conventional chemical and thermal treatments, to recover valuable raw materials. With an annual output of one million recycled cells, the CRCC is a key part of BMW’s long-term goal of creating fully recyclable battery cells.
