Devon Hofmeyr, a director of the Afrikaner right-wing Bittereinders movement, and three others have been charged with assault and public violence in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court.

Hofmeyr made a brief appearance alongside right-wing activist Willem Petzer, and Tewie Wessels after handing themselves over to the police on Monday. A fourth man, Dries Olivier, could not appear in court and submitted a sick note.

The accused were among hundreds of people who gathered outside the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court court on 24 January, when Piet Groenewald and his stepson, Stephan Greeff, appeared on charges of assaulting an employee and sicking a dog on him.
