Ahead of his highly anticipated move to Manchester United, Ruben Amorim made a memorable statement on Tuesday night.

He led Sporting Lisbon to a 4-1 Champions League victory over Manchester City.

The impressive win handed Pep Guardiola’s side their first 90-minute defeat in the competition since May 2022, ending a 32-match unbeaten run and marking City’s heaviest loss in over four years.

Viktor Gyokeres was the star again for Amorim, netting a hat-trick, including two penalties, sealing his place as one of Europe’s top talents.

The Swedish forward, with 25 goals for club and country this season, has been vital for Sporting and may well attract interest from Manchester United as Amorim takes over.

City took an early lead through Phil Foden, but failed to capitalize on a dominant first half.

Gyokeres leveled the score before halftime, and the second half saw Sporting’s relentless counterattacks exploit City’s vulnerabilities.

Max Araujo put Sporting ahead seconds into the restart, followed by Gyokeres converting his first penalty.

City’s chance to close the gap was lost as Erling Haaland’s spot-kick hit the bar.

Gyokeres completed his hat-trick with another penalty, sealing a commanding victory.

Sporting fans bid farewell to their manager with roaring applause, as Amorim now prepares to bring his style to Old Trafford.
