The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has been asked to investigate possible hate speech and incitement to violence in a now deleted online post by former City of Johannesburg mayor, Thapelo Amad.

Amad posted images of himself with a rifle and expressing his support for Hamas. In his deleted post, he said: “We stand with Hamas, Hamas stands with us, together we are Palestin and Palestin will be free. With our souls, with our blood, we will conquer Al AQSA (sic).”

In reaction to backlash, Amad said: “I have put down the post because of the influx of messages I received. I am in a meeting and can’t engage all the responses to my post,” Amad said.
