Three people accused of selling muffins laced with dagga to school children will face 43 charges of attempted murder.

On Wednesday, Amukelani Nyulunga, 19; Ofentse Maluleka, 21; and Katlego Matlala, 29, appeared at the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court to face the 43 charges after they allegedly sold “muffins laced with a substance with a narcotic effect to children”, said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

“It is alleged that on Wednesday, 20 September, the first two accused – Nyulunga and Maluleka – sold these muffins to schoolchildren from Pulamadibogo Primary School in Soshanguve Block Y. It is further alleged that the children started vomiting, experiencing stomach cramps and behaving strangely at school,” Mahanjana added.

News24 previously reported that 90 pupils in grades R to 7 from Pulamadibogo Primary School were hospitalised after consuming the muffins.

Concerned teachers alerted emergency services, who rushed the pupils to nearby health facilities.

Nyulunga and Maluleka were arrested on the same day of the incident and remain in custody.

Matlala handed himself to the police and was arrested on 26 September, after evidence linked him to the offence.

The bail application for the three accused started on Wednesday, but the matter was postponed to 20 October.
