Ogun constructed 1,474 classrooms, employed 3,000 teachers – Commissioner

The Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu on Wednesday said the Gov Dapo Abiodun administration has constructed over 1,474 classrooms while the construction and rehabilitation of 332 others are ongoing.

This is as he said the government has 8,800 two-seater desks and benches for primary schools, 3,900 two-seater desks and benches for Junior Secondary schools and 2,395 furniture for teachers.

The Commissioner disclosed this while addressing journalists about the progress made so far in the Ministry.

He said that the state has equally employed 3000 teachers to fill up some vacancies while the abolition of fees in the primary and secondary schools has helped to increase enrolment with a sharp decline in out-of-school children in the State.

Arigbabu also disclosed that the government owned eight technical colleges are currently undergoing rehabilitation with a view to make them word-class and topnotch vocational training centres.

According to Arigbabu, the strides of the Abiodun administration show the importance attached to qualitative education and commitment to improving access to qualitative education in the state.

“Over 1,474 classrooms’ construction and rehabilitation projects have been completed across the State while another 332 construction and classroom rehabilitation are ongoing.

“The government has also supplied 8,800 two-seater desks and benches for public primary schools’ learners, supplied 3,900 two-seater desks and benches for Junior Secondary Schools’ students while 2,395 teachers’ furniture has also been made available for both the primary and junior secondary schools,” the commissioner said.

The Commissioner said that the government has also been paying regular monthly subventions to all the state-owned tertiary Institutions while there is also approval of N200m as Annual Intervention Fund for the infrastructural development among the institutions that are not enjoying TetFund support.

Speaking further, Arigbabu also disclosed that the government has commenced construction of smart classrooms in its secondary schools across the 20 local governments of the state.

He said that the creation of smart classrooms is to create a conducive environment for teaching and learning in the state.

Arigbabu stated that the smart classrooms are being constructed in 72 of the designated secondary schools including the flagship schools under the first phase of the project.

The schools, according to him, are being equipped with required teaching aides to make learning conducive for learners.

In addition, the commissioner explained that the government will also be constructing 12 mega classrooms, three each in the four divisions of the state with capacity to accommodate 900 learners to further decongest the number of learners in each classroom.
