From a fourth-place finish in 2023, Chancellery House stunned the competition to emerge victorious at the 34th edition of the International School, University of Lagos annual inter-house athletics competition held on Thursday.

Led by their star athlete Usman Mohammed, Chancellery outshone other teams, securing 14 gold, eight silver, and two bronze medals, relegating the defending champion, School House, to fourth place this year.

Mohammed, who clinched three gold medals in the boys’ 400m, 800m, and 1500m events, was named the best athlete of the one-day tournament. For his outstanding performance, he was awarded N250,000, donated by Bayo Lambo.

Senate House retained its second position on the overall medal table with eight gold, six silver, and 10 bronze medals. Bursary House also maintained its third place with seven gold, three silver, and 16 bronze medals.

Former champion School House could not defend its title, finishing fourth with six gold, 10 silver, and four bronze medals. Registry and Congregation Houses finished fifth and sixth, respectively, at the well-attended meet.

In his remarks, the Principal of ISL, Kolawole Amusan, emphasised the importance of sporting activities in schools, describing the event as a major highlight for students.

“Apart from providing students and staff with the opportunity to forge friendly rivalries, it also allows the school to discover and showcase talents. It is a time for bonding and friendship outside the classroom, especially among house members as they plan and compete together in various athletics activities,” he said.

ISL’s Head of Sports, Ijeoma Ernest, praised the athletes for their performances and encouraged them to continue developing their talents, which could help them secure scholarships abroad.
