English Premier League duo, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, have been dealt a major blow after West Brom confirmed that their January transfer target Josh Maja has suffered an injury that will rule him out for about six weeks, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
According to Transfer News, the Nigerian striker is a major transfer target for the two London clubs.
“Chelsea and Tottenham are considering a January bid for Josh Maja from West Brom,” Transfer News wrote on X.
However, the latest report from West Brom confirmed that the in-form striker is set to undergo surgery after suffering a lower leg injury and will be sidelined for several weeks.
“Josh Maja is set to miss several weeks after sustaining a lower leg injury,” the club wrote.
“The 26-year-old striker will undergo surgery in the coming days before entering a period of rehabilitation.”
Maja has been in scintillating form for the English Championship club this season. The 26-year-old striker has scored 12 goals and provided two assists in 26 Championship appearances for The Baggies this season, helping them to 6th place.
The Nigerian’s 12 goals in the SkyBet Championship places him second on the goalscorers’ chart, three goals behind Norwich City’s Borja Sainz.
The former Fulham’s performances have attracted interest from top clubs in England with rumours linking him with moves to Chelsea and Tottenham.
However, with the striker expected to be out of action for several weeks, nothing concrete may come out of the transfer mill this January.
Also, Maja’s injury will come as a major blow for West Brom, as the Nigerian has produced more than a third of their goals in the Championship this season.
The club’s second-highest goalscorer is Karlan Grant, who has six goals and two assists in 25 games.
