Diego Simeone’s long-standing tenure at Atletico Madrid appears to be nearing its conclusion.

Reports from Spain suggest the club have begun planning for his replacement.

Having led the Rojiblancos for 13 years, Simeone’s influence and iconic status are undeniable, but a sense of fatigue seems to be settling within the club hierarchy, according to Football Espana.

Relevo reports that the arrival of the club’s new Director of Football Carlos Bucero 10 months ago has marked a gradual decline of Simeone’s absolute power at Atletico.

Bucero has taken over key decision-making duties that previously fell under Simeone and his Sporting Director Andrea Berta.

Berta is also expected to leave at the end of the current season.

Despite signing a contract extension until 2027 last year, reports show that the renewal was partly designed to spread out his substantial salary, estimated at €45 million gross for the 2023-24 season and over €100 million in total through 2027.

The financial implications of an early termination remain a key obstacle for the club, as they seek to avoid a costly payout.

Meanwhile, Atletico’s owners, who are reportedly exploring a potential sale of the club, have also tied Simeone’s future to their negotiations, complicating immediate decisions.

Additionally, there is a sentiment of respect for the Argentine manager, with the club preferring that he take the first step to depart rather than forcing his exit.
