Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has praised Victor Boniface following his impressive display in their 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim on Saturday.
Reflecting on the road win, the Spaniard emphasised that he expects more from the Nigeria striker, particularly when the team is out of possession.
The 23-year-old forward was instrumental in Die Werkself’s commanding win, providing an assist for the opener and netting a brace to open his Bundesliga account for the 2024/25 season.
However, Alonso believes there is still room for improvement in Boniface’s game.
“He can and must do more. He knows it, and the team needs it,” the Spanish tactician emphasised at the post-match press conference.
Alonso stressed the importance of Boniface’s contribution when Leverkusen are not in possession, indicating that the striker’s defensive work is an area that requires attention.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder acknowledged Boniface’s offensive prowess, noting, “It’s always difficult for defenders to play against him.”
The Nigerian’s second goal, in particular, was singled out by Alonso as being “very important for the striker’s confidence and mood.”
Boniface’s performance marked a strong return to the team after serving a suspension for unprofessional conduct in his previous league appearance. His Man-of-the-Match display helped the defending champions bounce back from their recent defeat to RB Leipzig, which ended their 35-match unbeaten league run.
The victory at Hoffenheim extended Leverkusen’s unbeaten away winning streak in the Bundesliga to 19 games, the second-longest in the division’s history. It also propelled the team to fourth place in the league standings with six points, setting a positive tone ahead of their upcoming Champions League campaign.
Alonso is expecting “the best from Boni” this season, particularly after the striker’s previous campaign was disrupted by a tendon injury that sidelined him from January to March.
As Leverkusen prepare for their midweek Champions League clash with Feyenoord, all eyes will be on Boniface to see if he can rise to his coach’s challenge and deliver another stellar performance on the continental stage.
