Team Nigeria is one of the countries that will be representing Africa as they make their appearance at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
The most popular black nation in the world will be hoping they leave a statement in the hearts of everyone at the event. Team Nigeria’s talented athletes will compete in various events, showcasing their skills from the tracks to the field and the courts in Paris.
The West African country will be participating in sports such as football, basketball, athletics, weightlifting, and more. As Team Nigeria takes center stage in the City of Light, they will be driven by the values of excellence, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Here are the games that Team Nigeria will participate in at the Paris 2024 Olympics
(1) Football:
Team Nigeria’s women’s football team qualified for the Olympics by winning the fourth-round match in the 2024 CAF Women’s Olympic qualifying tournament.
(2) Basketball:
The Nigeria women’s national basketball team qualified for the Olympics by finishing in the top two eligible nations at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in Antwerp, Belgium.
(3) Long Jump:
Nigerian track and field athletes achieved the entry standards for Paris 2024, either by passing the direct qualifying mark or by world ranking
(4) Weight lifting:
Nigeria entered two weightlifters into the Olympic competition. Rafiatu Lawal (women’s 59 kg) and Joy Ogbonne Eze (women’s 71 kg) secured two of the top ten slots in their weight divisions based on the IWF Olympic Qualification Rankings.
(6) Badminton:
Nigeria entered one badminton player into the Olympic tournament based on the BWF Race to Paris Ranking
(7) Boxing:
For the first time since 2016, Nigeria entered three boxers into the Olympic tournament. Dolapo Omole (men’s featherweight), Olaitan Olaore (men’s heavyweight) and Cynthia Ogunsemilore (women’s lightweight) secured one spot in their respective division.
(8) Canoeing:
Two Nigerian female canoeists qualified for the Games through the gold medal result in the C-2 500 meters event at the 2023 African Olympic in Abuja, Nigeria.
(9) Cycling:
Nigeria qualified one rider to compete in the women’s road race by finishing in the top two at the 2023 African Championships in Accra, Ghana.
(10) Swimming:
Nigeria sent two swimmers to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
(11) Table Tennis:
Nigeria entered four table tennis players into Paris 2024, Olajide Omotayo, Offiong Edem, Fatimo Bello and Aruna Quadri qualified for the games following the triumph of winning one of six available quota places, in their respective event, at the 2024 African Qualification Tournament.
(12) Taekwondo:
Nigeria qualified one athlete to compete at the games. Tokyo 2020 Olympian Elizabeth Anyanacho qualified for Paris.
(13) Discus:
This is the first time at the Olympic Games that Nigeria will have three women competing in the Discus event. The trio of Chioma Onyekwere, Ashley Anumba & Obiageri Amaechi will be hoping to bring home a medal when they wear the green and white.
