Vandalism to and theft of Eskom network infrastructure left residents in parts of Cape Town without power on Tuesday.
“At 03:30, the Eskom network infrastructure supplying electricity to [Gordon’s Bay, Strand, Somerset West, Railways and surrounding areas] was vandalised, leaving customers without electricity.
“This act of vandalism and theft affected both City of Cape Town municipality and Eskom customers,” the power utility said in a statement.
Technicians are trying to restore power but the time of restoration is unknown.
“It will be communicated as soon as possible. Customers are warned to treat all electrical installations as live for the full duration of the interruption,” Eskom added.

Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town took to X (formerly Twitter) to update people affected by the outage.
“It is unfortunately not possible to give a time for restoration at this stage,” it added.
Due to the large area involved, it will also take time to restore the network when work has been completed. Customers in both Eskom and City supply areas are affected.
Teams are onsite to see that the electricity supply to residents is restored as soon as possible.
