A warning that was issued for severe thunderstorms in several provinces, leading to heavy downpours and excessive lightning in parts of the country, will remain in place, according to the South African Weather Service.

Impact-based warnings

A Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms is expected over the southern parts of the North West (except for the extreme south-west of the province) and the north-central parts of the Free State.

A Yellow Level 2 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms and disruptive rain over the northern parts of the North West (except for the north-east of the province), the Free State (except for the eastern and western extremes), extreme east of the Northern Cape, south-eastern parts of Mpumalanga, northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal and eastern half of the Eastern Cape.

The storms are expected to result in heavy downpours, strong winds, hail and excessive lightning that may lead to the flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas, resulting in the closure of some bridges and roads, and short-term disruptions to municipal services.

The conditions pose a safety risk to people (fast flowing streams/deep water), a danger to informal/formal houses or structures in populated areas (urban or rural villages), and may result in structural damage to homes and carports.
