More than 50 000 people were arrested in less than a month this festive season, police said, and several of the arrests were connected to serious and violent crimes such as murder, rape and assault.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the arrests formed part of Operation Shanela activities and the police’s festive season operations, which involved increased foot, vehicle, and air support patrols in hotspot areas.

“To date, more than 61 051 patrols were conducted, and this will continue and be intensified as people start migrating back to their workplaces and back to school for learners,” Mathe said.
