  • Gayton McKenzie is making significant strides in his weight loss journey.
  • The Patriotic Alliance leader started exercising after struggling to close his suit jacket while being sworn in as a minister earlier this year.
  • Despite travelling to Russia recently, the he says that he stayed disciplined and even lost an additional 2kg.

The newly appointed Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has hit the ground running – literally.

The Patriotic Alliance leader embarked on a weight loss journey a few months ago and is making incredible progress, having lost around 15kg in just three months.

McKenzie decided to lose weight shortly after he struggled to fasten his jacket during his swearing-in ceremony early in July.

He wrote on Facebook at the time:

The Deputy President Paul Mashatile asked me to fasten my jacket during my swearing-in ceremony. I couldn’t because of my big stomach. I have since started to run, and this morning, I was wearing the same suit. Don’t be jealous, go run.

Since then, he has shared a handful of updates about his fitness journey and most recently said that a trip to Russia didn’t stop him from dropping an additional 2kg.

The minister shared that he ate a lot, but ran even more to stay on top of things. “The food was everywhere, and I ate, but I ran more.”

McKenzie expressed delight over his additional 2kg loss and shared how his “9-pack” was loading.

“This is even though I ate so much. But I ran, I ran, and I stayed away from carbs and just ate meat. Guys, run! My nine-pack is loading!”

He also encouraged his fans and followers to join him on “weigh-in Wednesday”.

“I weighed 146kg when I became a minister, and then I started walking and sometimes running. But I’ve decided to take it a notch further. We’re now having [a] Wednesday weigh-in. Please get your scales. We’re going to weigh in every Wednesday. When you want to eat something, you’ll go, ‘Ahh, I need to weigh in tomorrow.'”

Needless to say, McKenzie’s supporters have hurried to the comment section to sing his praises and ask for advice for their own weight loss journeys.
