Police sergeant arrested for fatally shooting Air Force member outside police station

It is understood that the police sergeant and the SANDF officer had quarrelled at a tavern. The latter then went to lay a charge at a police station, where he was shot by the sergeant.

• It is understood that the sergeant and the victim had quarrelled at a tavern. 
• The SANDF officer then went to Hoedspruit Police Station in Limpopo to lay a charge. He was shot by the sergeant outside the police station.

An argument
at a Limpopo tavern has left an Air Force member dead and a police sergeant in
jail for murder.

The
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested the 37-year-old
police officer on Friday. 

According
to the police watchdog, the sergeant had a quarrel with a 33-year-old member of
the SA National Defense Force (SANDF) at Kinimambo tavern.

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said:

The
sergeant went to the police station at around 02:30 and came across the SANDF
member outside the police station, Shuping continued.

“He
allegedly fired several shots and the SANDF member was fatally wounded.
Paramedics declared him dead.”

The case
was reported to IPID, which arrested the police officer.

He will
appear in the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing a murder charge.

The SANDF
confirmed the “sudden passing” of one of its Air Force members who
was based in Hoedspruit.

Both the
police and the military police are investigating the case.
