Seth Mayi scored a goal in each half to help Remo Stars beat newly promoted Nigeria Premier Football League side Ikorodu City 2-0 to win the 2024 Value Jet Cup on Wednesday in Ikenne, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The striker headed Remo Stars ahead in the 26th minute and was at the end of a rebound to make it 2-0 in the 68th minute before Otaniyi Taofeek reduced the deficit for Ikorodu City in stoppage time.
Both teams entered the final with high adrenaline, having scaled tough hurdles in the semis.
The intensity was apparent in the early stages of the game, with Ikorodu City goalkeeper Yusuf Rauf denying Remo’s Ibrahim Abubakar in the ninth minute.
The tournament was Ikorodu City’s first test ahead of their NPFL debut next season, testing some of their best legs and new recruits against teams like Rivers United, Remo Stars, 3SC, and Sudanese Champions Al-Merihkk.
Remo Stars have now won the first pre-season tournament ahead of the 2024/25 NPFL season, bagging a total prize of N5m, and they will take part in the Coal City Cup, which kicks off on Thursday (today) in Enugu.
