The Gbaramatu Lawyers Association has commended President Bola Tinubu for his assent to the Nigerian Maritime University bill.

In a statement, the association’s president, Friday Emotimide said Tinubu’s assent has given the institution a legal foundation and structure to thrive.

The presidential assent was a fall out if the passage of the bill by the Senate, which had previously been rejected by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 due to funding concerns.

The association stressed that the assent was greatly beneficial to the aspirations of many people living in the riverine and coastal areas of the region.

“We are grateful that, under your visionary leadership, this vital and strategic institution has been given the legal foundation and structure to thrive.

“Indeed this landmark achievement brings hope and enormous opportunities to Nigerians, particularly the people from the riverine and coastal areas.

“We appreciate the role played by Mr. President in the achievement of this feat for our people.

“This historic assent highlights the university’s potential to create jobs and promote peace in the Niger Delta region,” the statement read.

The Nigerian Maritime University, located in Okerenkoko, Delta State, was set up to promote learning, identify technological problems in the maritime industry, and develop academic and professional programs leading to various degrees.
