“This is ours! This is ours!”

Bafana Bafana’s assistant coach Helman Mkhalele drummed the message to his players ahead of a dramatic penalty shootout on the 28th anniversary of the team’s 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) triumph on home soil.

Ronwen Williams, who has served the team with distinction in this tournament, brilliantly delivered – saving four penalties to help Bafana beat Cape Verde 2-1 in the shootout and advance to the semi-final of the Afcon for the first time since 2000.
