The Global Affairs Magazine Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to human capacity development by awarding scholarships to less fortunate pupils.
The foundation stated this in a statement to celebrate the third edition of the Global Affairs Magazine Awards 2024, held recently in Lagos.
The foundation’s founder, Regina Robinson, stressed the foundation’s dedication to empowering young people and recognising individuals who excelled in humanitarian service.
During the event, scholarships were presented to underprivileged children who had been out of school, with support from the Chairman of the occasion, Dr Oluwasegun Musa.
“Since the unveiling of the foundation, we have been engaging in humanitarian efforts within our capacity.
“These children reached out to us after being sent out of school, and we assured them that we would step in. During this event, we invited them to say, ‘Come, we are giving you scholarships.”
She explained that the scholarships currently covered education from primary to secondary school.
“At least for now, we can support up to the secondary level. Everything big starts small, but we are optimistic about growing to include tertiary education in the future. We have also assisted others quietly, behind the scenes,” she added.
Musa emphasised the broader essence of charity, stressing that it is not just about financial donations but also about dedicating time, expertise, and compassion.
“Tonight, we celebrate individuals and organisations who have shown exceptional generosity and commitment to Nigeria’s development,” Musa said.
He noted the significant role of philanthropy in Nigeria, revealing that over ₦1 trillion was donated to charitable causes in 2020, with 70 per cent of donors focusing on education and healthcare.
Chairman of the Global Affairs Magazine Awards, Dr Omatshola Iseli, called for increased social responsibility from privileged individuals, especially in addressing Nigeria’s socioeconomic challenges.
“It is essential for those with the means to extend a helping hand to the less fortunate. By doing so, we can collectively reduce the crime rate and support the government in tackling societal issues,” Iseli said.
During the event, 20 individuals and two organisations were honoured with awards for their outstanding commitment to humanitarian services.
