A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Cletus Obun, has stated that it is within the responsibilities of his party to actively undermine the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He emphasized that engaging in strategic political maneuvers against the opposition is essential for the APC to maintain its influence and strengthen its position in the political landscape.

Obun, who is also a former chairman of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) in Cross River State, expressed that destabilizing opposition parties serves as an effective political strategy.

He argued that employing such tactics can significantly enhance a party’s competitive edge, allowing it to navigate the complex political landscape more successfully.

He stated this on Friday while fielding questions on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.

Obun was reacting to a statement made by a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, who attributed the ongoing crisis within the party to President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint Nyesom Wike as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Sowunmi revealed  that Wike’s appointment has created divisions and contributed to the turmoil currently affecting the PDP.

Sowunmi faulted Tinubu’s decision to appoint Wike as a minister in August last year.

However, Obun said destabilizing another party is permissible as long as it’s not disruptively violent.

He said: “If PDP comes out to say so, it’s the worst political confession to be ever made. If you’re saying that we’re able to infiltrate PDP and destabilize them, it’s part of our duty to so, just as it is their work to also ensure that the APC is destabilized; so long as it’s not disruptive to become violent. It’s a good political weapon to use.”
