Methodist Girls High School, Lagos, has expressed concerns over its low student population as it concludes the celebration of its 145th anniversary on Sunday.
Speaking to The PUNCH during the celebration which started on Monday, Principal, Mrs Oluyemisi Padonu, explained that there was a need for increased student enrollment, as the current population stood at around 350.
She also said the high cost of electricity was a challenge, adding that they paid N5m per month for electricity.
Padonu added, “High electricity costs, with Band A paying as much as N5m per month is huge. We need more computer systems. Despite our efforts to enhance the school’s offerings, we had hoped to see a larger increase in enrollment. However, our commitment to maintaining high standards remains unwavering. We will not relent in our pursuit of excellence; instead, we will continue to implement initiatives that make the school more attractive to prospective students and their families. Our goal is to ensure that more parents choose to enroll their children here.”
The 145th anniversary kicked off on Monday, October 21, 2024, with a Holy Communion service at the Dame Adebutu Hub.
Immediately after the service, they embarked on a vibrant carnival parade featuring floats with the old girls participating in various groups and showcasing unique costumes specific to each set.
She said, “One notable attendee will be Mama Payne, who is around 90 years old. She is a devoted school supporter and actively participates in all our events. She has even marched in our past ceremonies, representing the Nightingale House from her school days. It’s truly inspiring to see her commitment!”
On Tuesday, the school held the Speech and Prize Giving Day for students who had excelled and were recognised with various awards, not limited to academic achievements.
Also, a commemorative magazine, titled, ‘The Highflyer,’ was unveiled and the special edition highlighted the rich history and achievements of Methodist Girls High School, Yaba, Lagos.
She added, “Today, we honor teachers and students who have demonstrated outstanding qualities beyond academics. This annual event attracts community members and guests from across Nigeria who contribute to endowments for various purposes, and awards will be presented on this day.”
Chairman of the occasion was the Chairman Yaba Local Council Development Area, Dr Adejare Omiyale, Royal Father of the Day was Oba Suleiman Owolabi Ogun-Oloko (Ade Ori Okin II), Olu of Iwaya, Yaba Kingdom.
During the recent prize-giving ceremony held on Tuesday, outstanding students were recognised for their exceptional academic performance across various classes.
Overall Best JS1, Keazor Oluwadimilade; second position, Ogunlade Jesupelumi, and third position, Adewusi Adegbesola.
Overall Best JS2, first place, Okafor Amarachi; second place, Obasuyi Iyaye; third place, Babatunde Khadijat.
The overall best SS1, first place, Favour Ekeson; second place, Mercy Igbe; third place, Nmesoma Eneremadu; overall Best SS2, first place, Esther Osula; second place, Oluwatobiloba Davies, and third place, Aduke Ajetunmobi.
Additionally, the ceremony honored the top graduates of the 2023/2024 academic year, Best Graduating Student (WAEC 2023/2024), Oshikoya Victoria and Best Graduating Student (NECO BECE 2023/2024), Oluwapemi Adegboyega.
Also at the event, Kamiye George received recognition as most well-behaved student,
Mr Gerald Olusuyi was awarded the title of Most Resourceful Teacher, and Pastor Akan Frank was named Parents of the Year.
On Wednesday, October 23, the school celebrated “Back to School Day,” and on Thursday, October 24, the anniversary featured the inter-house sports day.
She said, “We invite everyone to join us! It’s a special occasion where old girls, even those who graduated 100 years ago, returned in their school uniforms. Many purchased new uniforms for the day, and they will be treated as students, enjoying lunch with us in the dining hall. It was a fun-filled and nostalgic experience.
“With six houses competing, this year’s event is set to be grander than ever. We invited additional schools and organisations to join us, and while some events have already concluded, the finals will take place on this day. It’s sure to be an exciting competition”
Speaking on the remaining events, Padomu said, “On Friday, we will host International Cultural Day. Students will represent various countries, showcasing their customs, traditions, flags, and costumes. Our girls have been grouped by country, and the competitive spirit will shine as they put forth their best efforts in this celebration of global diversity.
“Saturday is designated for the Global Reunion of our old girls. This event truly brings together alumni from around the world, many of whom have already arrived in Nigeria to reconnect and celebrate. Each graduating set will have its unique way of celebrating, making it a day filled with joy and camaraderie.
“Finally, on Sunday, we will hold a grand finale service at Memorial Methodist Cathedral to give thanks to God at the 10 am service. Following the service, there will be a luncheon that doubles as a fundraising event, where we will also recognize and award deserving individuals.
“On Monday, we’ll take a moment to rest and express our appreciation to the retired members of the Board of Governors. We look forward to celebrating these wonderful events together.”
