Eight teenage girls who were trafficked to Ghana have been rescued, according to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).
Abike Dabiri-Erewa announced that the rescued girls had been turned over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, or NAPTIP, to make sure they had safe and comfortable accommodations while they awaited their official rehabilitation and reintegration with their families. She made this announcement while welcoming the young ladies at the NiDCOM Annex Office in Lagos.
The girls that were saved range in age from 15 to 22 and are from different states in Nigeria, such as Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom, Imo, Plateau, and Cross River.
They claim that after being led to Ghana with false promises of jobs, they were coerced into engaging in sexual exploitation.
She commended the Ghanaian security authorities for their cooperation and pointed out that there are still a lot more trafficked victims out there waiting to be rescued.
A Ghanaian court arrested and sentenced 28-year-old Nigerian Favour Ugwu, one of the traffickers, to eight years in prison for the crime of human trafficking.
